Best Locations
for a Photoshoot
in Tuscany

the unseen photography dreamy couple photo shoot in tuscany

Are you dreaming of a gorgeous
photoshoot in Tuscany?

you're in the right place!
it's one of the most photogenic regions in the world.
You just need to know where to go.

Here are the most MAGICAL locations
that will leave you ENCHANTED

Tuscany without doubt is one of the loveliest regions in Italy, if not the world. It’s a cradle of art and culture, home to world famous cuisine and mesmerising landscapes. Its winding roads, rolling hills, serpentines of cypress trees and golden light will blow you away. Nothing else beats it. No wonder that for hundreds of years artists from all paths have docked here to let their creativity flow.

Tuscany, indeed, is an inspiring and picturesque region, yet bear in mind that it’s big. When deciding on where in Tuscany to go for your photoshoot, it’s best to zoom in and narrow down your choices.

The three main areas with stunning panoramas and 100% satisfaction guarantee are considered to be Val d’Orcia, Chianti and Crete Senesi.

BUT! I’ll add a secret bonus location just for you!

location 1

VAL D’ORCIA

The land of Gladiator, golden hills, cypress roads and poetic light. Located in the centre of the region, this UNESCO heritage site draws millions of tourists every year. For a good reason, of course. With its stunning panorama and cobblestone villages, the valley is the pure essence of Tuscany. Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino are all here just a stone’s throw away from one another. The villages and the adjacent countryside are filled with wonderful spots for a photoshoot. The only tricky part about it, is picking the right places to avoid the crowds. No worries, though! An experienced photographer will know where to go and at what time to make the most of the location and the light. So trust the professional!

location 2

CHIANTI

Chianti gives its name to world-famous red wine, traded under a Black Rooster sign. It’s a landscape decorated with hundred-years-old olive groves, endless vineyards, honey-coloured stone farmhouses, dense forests, medieval rural churches, castles and villages. Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti are the main hubs in the area, but it’s the countryside that draws the visitors.

If you dream of a vineyard photoshoot, then Chianti is definitely your destination. Bear in mind, however, that like the rest of living nature, vineyards change with seasons. In May you’ll find the vine hills green and saturated, in summer they’ll start turning a little yellow and in autumn the leaves will slowly change into a fusion of orange and red shades. Between November and March the vines are leafless, so plan your timing carefully, if colours are an important element for you.

Anything else you should be aware of? Private property! All the vineyards are private and if you dream of a photoshoot in Chianti, again, trust a local photographer who will know where to take you and at what time of the day, so that you’re able to squeeze the maximum out of your session!

location 3

CRETE SENESI

Also the area of Crete Senesi reflects the collective imagination about Tuscany. Situated south of Siena, just like Val d’Orcia, it’s home to hectares of hilly countryside, wheat fields, cypress and olive trees. What makes it stand out from the other Tuscan princesses, though, are its light grey clay slopes. They are very distinctive of this area and bring in mind a lunar landscape. Another trait of this lovely area is it’s silence and stillness. There are very few villages in the area and when you get off the main road, the only thing you hear is the wind dancing on the fields.

The main tourist bases in the area are Asciano, Buonconvento and Monteroni d’Arbia, but yet again, what you’re looking for are the romantic landscapes kissed by golden sunshine and they are in the countryside.

Since it’s less known than Val d’Orcia and Chianti, it requires a good knowledge of the area. It’s best if you trust your photographer with what, where and when to be sure that you take home stunning photos from your visit to this timeless location.

BONUS LOCATION (psssst… keep it secret)

PRATOMAGNO

Here is my hidden treasure. Unlike anything else you can experience in Tuscany, Pratomagno seems more like a scenery copied and pasted from Scotland or New Zealand. It’s a mountain range in the eastern part of the region, bordering the Apennine ridge between Casentino and Valdarno. It hypnotises with it’s landscape and invites to explore the numerous paths that lead to its natural wonders.

Pratomagno is completely off the beaten track and known only to locals. Still, it’s equally breathtaking and unlike the other three locations, it’s very original and diverse. No, you won’t find cypress trees and winding roads here. Instead you’ll step into a magical world on the edge of a mountain with Tuscany spreading under your feet.

To get there, you need a local photographer, who will brief you in about what to wear, when to go and at where to meet. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can combine your photoshoot with trekking and walk the entire mountain ridge. It takes 4-5 hours there and back and makes for a fantastic full-day trip.

How to Plan an Elopement in Tuscany | 10 TIPS

How to plan an
elopement in tuscany
10 tips

how to elope in tuscany

Ready for an adventure
of your dreams?

TIPS, LOCATIONS AND SAMPLE TIMELINES
FOR AN ELOPEMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME

Here is a complete guide on how to elope in tuscany

Tuscany is a land of beauty, romance and beautiful landscapes and if you do decide to elope here, you surely won’t regret it! The nature of elopements is that they are tailor made and also yours can be. Whether you are for a romantic elopement, boho, chic or adventurous one, Tuscany has everything to offer to meet your wildest dreams.

But… what exactly is an elopement?

Elopement means a “love escape to get married” and is a form of an intimate destination wedding in a location of your dreams. It means living a day of your life on your own terms and leaving everything behind. Whether just in two or with a handful of closest people, it’s becoming increasingly popular for the freedom it grants and the sense of adventure on your wedding day.

10 tips on how to elope in Tuscany
10 tips on how to elope in Tuscany

… and why in Tuscany?

Now, let’s jump into it!

Here are the 10 tips on how to plan your extraordinary elopement in Tuscany

tip 1

Choose how you’d like to get married

The good news is that you don’t have to live in Italy to get legally married here and there are two ways of eloping:

  1. Do your papers at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Tuscany – coming from abroad, many couples choose to do all their paperwork in their home country and only do a symbolic ceremony in Tuscany.
  2. Get legally married in Tuscany – if you want to officially legalise your marriage in Tuscany, you need to bring your passports and birth certificates and head over to the Marriage Office in the town or city in which your ceremony will take place and book an appointment. If you don’t speak Italian, you may need the support of a translator. The Office will release a marriage certificate to be signed during your ceremony. The certificate needs to be signed by two witnesses, but don’t worry, if you’re just eloping in two, your wedding vendors can sign it for you.

tip 2

Decide on the style of your elopement

Are you a food lover or do you seek an adventure? Would you like to drive around Tuscany on a Vespa or rather spend the day in a thermal spa? Define what your perfect day would look like and plan accordingly. There are infinite types of locations for elopement. You can get married in a rustic agriturismo or in the fields in the middle of nowhere. You can choose mountains, a beach, a vineyard or an olive grove. Narrow down your preferences and that will help you looking for the right location.

tip 3

Pick the area of Tuscany for your love escape

Here are the most beautiful, in my opinion, locations to consider:

VAL D’ORCIA

Val d’Orcia is a valley in central Tuscany and if you’re looking for postcard Italy, this is where you’ll find it! Golden rolling hills, white cypress roads, romantic light and little cobblestone villages, it’s all here. In fact since 2024 Val d’Orcia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and locals feel very strongly about preserving it’s natural beauty and authenticity. You can choose whether to elope in the countryside with the fields in the backdrop or in one of the gorgeous little towns like Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino to name just a few. Oh, I forgot to mention, it’s where The Gladiator was filmed.

Around Siena

Equally beautiful to Val d’Orcia and a little less known (but just a little), the countryside around Siena is filled with picturesque corners for a scenic elopement. The area is home to countless rustic villas famous for destination weddings and elopements. If you’re after winding cypress roads and endless hills, you’ll find them here as well. A plus is the vicinity of Siena, one of the must-see cities in Tuscany, which itself is a fantastic location for an elopement or a post-elopement photo shoot. It has many cultural attractions and delicious restaurants that you could integrate into your elopement experience.

10 tips on how to elope in Tuscany

San Galgano Abbey

Would you like to feel like in a movie? Then San Galgano Abbey is your location. It’s a roofless cathedral located 34 km away from Siena. It’s poetic, timeless and romantic. Weddings and elopements are officially held here and you can choose whether to involve an officiant from the nearby Marriage Office to legalise your marriage or to have a symbolic ceremony.

Chianti

Are you a food and red wine lover? Then Chianti is your safe bet. At the very heart of Tuscany, it’s home to the world renowned Chianti wine and one of Italy’s most famous food and wine destinations. Combine your elopement with wine and olive oil tasting, cooking classes, road trip around endless vineyards and live an unforgettable experience in this world famous gem.

tip 4

Make it an all-round experience

Are you a foodie? Organise your elopement around delicious food and wine! Are you into nature, arts, music, photography, horse riding, vespas, canyoning… make your passions part of your big day and make it truly unforgettable. Your elopement doesn’t have to be just about getting married. You can integrate anything you can dream of into the day and make it an all-round experience. From a classical music concert to a hiking trip, Tuscany has a lot to offer to curious souls.

tip 5

Choose the season

SPRING is actually a perfect season for an elopement. From the middle of April to the middle of June the weather is glorious and it’s not so busy in Tuscany just yet. Even though it’s not the high season, it’s a very popular time of year for weddings and if you’d like to book a location, it’s best to plan a few months in advance.

SUMMER is the busiest season in Tuscany in terms of tourism. Even though many couples decide to get married in July and August, the temperatures get so high that enjoying the outdoors during the day may be challenging. Still, you can plan your elopement on a beach and go for a swim afterwards!

AUTUMN is also a popular season among couples who come to Tuscany to get married, but keep in mind that from the end of September the evenings start to become chilly and dining outdoors may be less pleasant. The days are also shorter and you may need to add an evening experience to your elopement if you want to take the most out of the day.

WINTER is definitely the least popular of all the seasons. In fact many locations close for the winter months and reopen for Easter. Yet, if you don’t mind cooler temperatures (by cooler I mean 5-10 degrees), mystic atmosphere and tourist attractions all to yourselves, then this is your safe bet! Winter in Tuscany is quite unpredictable, though. You may find bright sunny days with 18 degrees and you might get a week of rain. It’s a gamble.

tip 6

Live your elopement like an adventure

Are you an adventurous spirit? Make your elopement a thrilling experience! Apuan Alps is where you’ll find canyoning, rafting and paragliding. The seaside will grant you aquatic adventures. There are countless trekking and hiking trails all across Tuscany. Motor cross, quads, mountain bikes, horse back riding, they’re all a big thing in Tuscany. Your elopement day can be the most awesome day of your lives.

tip 7

Incorporate your honeymoon

Has Tuscany been on your bucket list for a long time? Or maybe you’ve been here already and come back time and time again because you love it so much? Tuscany is an absolutely fantastic destination for your honey moon so why not making it the extension of your elopement! There is a vast offer for both budget and luxury travellers and you can effortlessly make it a magical time of celebration.

tip 8

Dress accordingly

Your elopement attire will depend on how much adventuring you’d like to do on the day. Make sure that you can move freely and you can walk, sit down and climb the stairs effortlessly. Your comfort will have a huge influence on your mood and you don’t want to ruin your elopement day with inaccurate attire which looks stunning, but limits you.

THE BRIDE

If you’re wearing a dress, make sure it’s light and easy to walk in. Avoid a mermaid dress and tight skirts. If you’re eloping in spring or autumn, bring some extra layers to cover your back and shoulders. In summer bring a mosquito spray and sun screen.

THE GROOM

Similar rules apply when it comes to men. The groom’s attire should be comfortable, not too heavy for summer time and not too light for spring and autumn. The layers should be easy to take off and, please, remember to empty your pockets!

BOTH

What both of you have to absolutely remember about are comfortable shoes! Make sure you break them before your elopement, especially if you plan to walk a lot. Unless you plan to elope on the beach, then you can even come barefoot!

tip 9

Book your vendors in time

Tuscany’s wedding market is rich in offer, but if there is somebody you’d particularly love to involve in your elopement, make sure to reach out to them as soon as you have the date and the location. In the past, weekdays were less popular, but nowadays couples get married from Monday to Sunday and it’s best to book early. Especially if you’re thinking about May-September months.

tip 10

Make a timeline

The timeline will depend on the experiences you’d like to live on your dream day. Below you’ll find a couple of examples of a possibile elopement timeline.

Rangefinder Magazine Photo of the Day

Rangefinder Magazine Photo of the Day

Wedding photographer Iga Koczorowska of Moko Photography, based in Arezzo, Italy, created a personal project as wedding inspiration, as well as “proof that Italy is not only about sunsets and vineyards,” she says. “It’s also full of moody forests, rocky rivers, ferns and broken trees. For this inspiration photo session, we went off the beaten track to create timeless, ethereal images that inspire to venture creatively outside of common wedding photography.”

I am very excited to have this photograph, entitled The Embrace, published as Photo of the Day by Rangefinder Magazine. Rangefinder Magazine Photo of the Day

Rangefinder Magazine Photo of the Day

There was that one second when everything interlocked perfectly – the light, the mood, the expression. It seemed like the time stopped, while my shutter was clicking. There was this little moment, which felt like magic. That moment was a proof that there is way more to photography than just a camera and a digital file, way more than just a pretty picture. A photograph is able to capture the soul, show the intangible, create a reality of its own.

I am very proud to have this photograph, entitled Reminiscing at the Lake, published as Photo of the Day by Rangefinder Magazine. This image is dear to me and it feels very special to know that it is appreciated by industry specialists. Seeing it published among photographs of acclaimed wedding and portrait professionals from all over the world gives me wings. Big thanks to editor-in-chief Jacqueline Tobin for featuring my work.

Blind Memory – Sisters Photo Session in Tuscany

Blind Memory – Sisters Photo Session in Tuscany

This series is about a relationship lost in the course of time. It tells a story of two sisters, their closeness, love and devotion, which eventually dissolve and each of them goes their own way. The photos are accompanied by the story, which is my interpretation. You can look at the images and read along or you can choose to make up your own story. After all, photography is about personal interpretation.

THE STORY

Zaria and Layla were as close as sisters can get. One was a mirror reflection of the other. You couldn’t tell where one of them ended and the other begun. They were one, sharing secrets, dreams and passions.

One day, when strolling through a meadow Layla noticed a beautiful rock. She picked it up and gave it to Zaria saying “whatever happens in life, I want this stone to remind you of me”.

Zaria, touched by the token, decided she wanted to gift Layla something in return. Something special and one of a kind. Right then, a firefly flew right in front of her and disappeared in the woods nearby. Without thinking, she jumped up, grabbed Layla by hand and together they ran off to the forest. Zaria tried to grab the firefly time and time again, but it was too quick. Yet she persisted and eventually catched it.

Delighted, Zaria put it in a little jar and was about to hand it to Layla. She couldn’t know that there was an ancient spell cast on fireflies in that forest. Hundreds of years ago, villagers living nearby were so fascinated by the fireflies that they caught almost all of them. Fireflies became almost extinct and an enchanter who lived in the woods cast a spell on the remaining few. Whoever touched them in the forest, would loose memory.

sisters photosession tuscany
sisters photosession tuscany

As Zaria held the firefly, her memory faded away. She couldn’t remember why she had caught the firefly nor why she was in the woods. Yet, worst of all, she couldn’t recognise the girl that was standing next to her. Looking at Layla she asked, “Who are you? Can I help you with something?”.

At first Layla thought it was one of many games that they played and laughed. Yet soon she realised what happened. Zaria didn’t recognise her. She lost all their memories, all the joys they shared and dreams they cultivated. And with them, Layla lost the dearest person she had. Zaria was standing there, but it was as if she was dead. Empty and hollow.

Model – photographer relationship – How do I work with models

Model – photographer relationship – How do I work with models

It is extremely important to me to work with a model that could potentially be my friend. And by friend I mean a person who shares my sensitivity and view on life. I’m not interested so much in her beauty, but rather in her personality. That’s for two reasons. Reason number one – personality speaks louder than beauty. Reason number two – I like feeling comfortable and at ease with a person I have in front of my camera.

I wasn’t aware that this aspect was so important to me. At the beginning I assumed that just anyone was fine for a shoot. But I soon realised that subconsciously I kept selecting models with certain character traits – gentle, feminine, soft-hearted and smart. Generally in life I have a tendency of avoiding dominating, loud people and I do the same when choosing a person to photograph.

When working on a photograph I need to feel the flow, I need to feel that me and my model understand each other without words, that there is harmony and balance between us. When the relationship doesn’t click, the shoot is like driving on a bumpy road. I may still get to my destination, but tired and irritated.

As a photographer, I expose my feelings and ideas to the model I photograph and for that reason it is fundamental that I find understanding and acceptance from her. As much as I need to feel accepted, so does she. After all, the making of a photograph is an exchange and each of us needs to give something of hers.

My model for this shoot, Magda, seems to be born to work with me. She is sensitive, cooperative, gentle and calm, but at the same time she is open to the most crazy, weird and wild ideas. This shoot was done in one of many beautiful parks in Warsaw, Poland. The day was a little rainy and humid, which kept people away from strolling the paths and gave us more space and freedom. We spent time in the bushes, fighting off mosquitoes, inventing stories, giggling and shooting. And here I would once again like to thank Magda for our amazing cooperation and I very much hope it was just one of many to come.

Nine months – Visual Journey through Pregnancy

Nine months – Visual Journey through Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a miracle. I understood it fully only when I found out I was pregnant and month after month watched my belly grow. As the little kicks from within me intensified, I couldn’t stop marvelling at how perfect nature was. Even though it is obvious how new life begins and since the beginning of time babies have been born the same way, I’m still astounded that I am able to give life to a new human being. It seems incredible that there is life inside me which from a tiny little seed has grown into a baby, a new person, a new story in the book of life. It stroke me as a revelation and it further deepened my admiration for the mechanisms of the universe.

No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you are the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.

As an expecting mum and a photographer I couldn’t just admire that miraculous state in the mirror. I needed to document the development of the life within me. I didn’t just want to take photos of my belly though. That wouldn’t be fulfilling enough. I needed to find a way of linking pregnancy with nature. When I think nature, I think forest, trees, flowers. Since I couldn’t bring a forest home, I opted for flowers. Every month I went to a flower market or a nearby meadow, set up black background next to my living room window and took photos of myself and the flowers to then edit and merge the shots together.

I set off imagining the project in colour, but as I got to the end of it, I found the colours too distracting. Although beautiful, they were obscuring the message. In colour the flowers dominated too much and I didn’t want nature to dominate, I wanted it to be in symbiosis with the body. Turning the images into a black and white series and working on them in greyscale brought me to where I wanted to get – to a subtle fusion of the feminine and the nature in full bloom.
